Previously we have looked at the high end Thule cargo box options, in looking over the Thule Spirit Box. Thule does sell some more affordable cargo box options, namely the Thule 604 Ascent. The Thule 604 Ascent hosts 16 cubic feet of storage capacity and is made from high grade impact and scratch resistant ABS plastic.

The Thule 604 Ascent is a great non-seasonal storage solution for your vehicle. In the winter it functions and a ski, snowboard, and gear storage box to and from the mountain. Otherwise it is perfect for transporting groceries, camping gear, strollers, and anything else you would like to get from point A to point B. The Ascent allows access to gear from either side of the car using patented dual-side opening feature and has built in security with its central locking mechanism.

Fuel economy is not compromised because of the smooth, aerodynamic design for minimal wind resistance as well as the diffuser technology that improves aerodynamic and torsion stability. The Ascent cargo box mounts to most factory crossbars, Thule base racks, and Yakima base racks. Drive Small, Carry Big with Thule

Drive Small, Carry Big with Thule

Just drive down the highway these days and you will notice a visible shift in types and sizes of vehicles people are driving. Gone are the days of the bigger-is-better, super-sized SUVs. The buzz words now are CUVs, sport wagons and gas-sipping compacts.

By just being an active person you have tons of stuff that you are used to hauling around. On any given day you are carting around helmets, gloves, sleeping bags, tents, backpacks, boots, paddles, skis, baby joggers, groceries, plywood, and way too many bags of potato chips and jerky. Just because you down-sized your vehicle does not mean this stuff is going to be able to transport itself.

With the addition of a rack system you can safely and easily carry the same amount of stuff (if not more) then you did with a gas-chugging SUV. Thule roof boxes have an available capacity up to 21 cubic feet so you can have they carrying capacity of a Ford Escape on a Toyota Prius. And adding this cargo room is a snap (or shall we say twist!). Cargo boxes equipped with Thule’s Quick Grip mounting hardware take under five minutes to install or remove. If the roof is not an option, try a hitch. Hitches are easy to install, fit a ton of vehicles and allow you to carry bikes, skis and even boxes on the back of your car. Pretty cool, huh?

High gas prices may be a shock for us but they are old news for the rest of the world. Many of the new smaller cars we see on the road in North America have been available in Europe for years. The North American public is learning what the rest of the world has already learned: drive a smaller car and add a Thule rack to increase cargo space.
